Numbers not known before WWI. Men were shipped from Hong Kong although most originated from China. By 1924, the BPC relied entirely on Chinese labourers for its phosphate work – 696; 1951 – 1,381; 1953 – 449. The drop in numbers was due to mechanisation and the end of post-war restoration work.
